Hero's escort passes through downtown Tampa for fallen Dunedin soldier Zachary Shannon

TAMPA - The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office conducted a Fallen Hero Escort for Army Spc. Zachary L. Shannon on Monday.

The Dunedin native died on March 11 in Kandahar, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 3rd Infantry Division at Hunter Army Airfield in Georgia.

Spc. Shannon's remains arrived at MacDill Air Force Base at 10:30 a.m. The escort began at the MacDill AFB Bayshore Gate.

The escort traveled north on Bayshore Boulevard through downtown Tampa to Interstate 275.

The escort then moved west across the Courtney Campbell Causeway before ending at Curlew Hills Memory Gardens at 1750 Curlew Road in Palm Harbor.

The Army specialist attended elementary, middle and high school in Dunedin.  

His family is holding this memorial from noon to 6 p.m. at the local VFW.  They will be selling wristbands to raise money for a scholarship in Shannon's name each year for Dunedin high school's best ROTC sharpshooter.

A private family funeral is planned.
