Manager at B & W Rexall Drugs in Citrus County accused in theft of lottery tickets

CITRUS COUNTY, Fla - A Citrus County drug store manager was arrested Monday and accused of stealing and then redeeming scratch-off lottery tickets.

Thomas Dorton, 33, of 2342 S. Ringley Terrace, Inverness, is charged with one count of grand theft and one count of dealing in stolen property.

Deputies say the thefts occurred at B & W Rexall Drug Store.

The store owner notified authorities of the thefts after they were notified by Capital City Bank that their lottery account was overdrawn by $6,000, an affidavit states.

Deputies were also advised that store owners contacted the Florida Lottery Commission and were advised winning tickets were redeemed at an Inverness grocery store.

According to an arrest affidavit, surveillance video at the grocery store showed Dorton redeeming the tickets.

Store owners say they know of at least $4,500 worth of lottery tickets that are missing but that there could be a total loss of $25,000.

Deputies say when they questioned Dorton as his home he confessed to taking an unknown amount of lottery tickets.

He allegedly admitted that he began taking tickets in September and took a few every couple days.

Deputies say workers at the Lottery Commission confirmed Dorton drove to a Gainesville lotto office on September 23 to redeem a $1,000 ticket.

Dorton worked at the drug store for five years.

He was arrested and later released on his own recognizance.
