Police seek help finding missing combat veteran who may be armed, suicidal

Missing veteran not located during search

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - A combat veteran has gone missing in Gainesville and authorities believe he may be suicidal.

Gainesville Police spokesperson Ofc. Ben Tobias said Saturday that Larry Vantassell, 52, called his out-of-state parents and indicated he was suicidal.

"Vantassell is a combat veteran from Iraq and suffers from reported PTSD and other painful injuries," Tobias said.

He was not located during a search Friday night and remains classified as an endangered missing adult.

Tobias said the last possible area Vantassell may have been seen was Northwest 2nd Street and Northwest 19th Lane in Gainesville. His last listed address was the Gainesville VA Hospital.

Vantassell is 5-feet-10, 165 pounds, and has tattoos on both upper arms.

Tobias stressed Vantassell is "very familiar with firearms and may possibly be armed."
