Police investigating the death of a 15-month-old boy in Wauchula

WAUCHULA - Police and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement are investigating two cases of abuse at a home in Wauchula, one of which resulted the death of a 15-month-old boy.

Wauchula police said Joel Jordan Chavez was unresponsive when he arrived at the hospital on Nov. 5. Doctors were unable to resuscitate him and he was pronounced dead. An autopsy showed several severe injuries to Chavez's body and the Medical Examiner ruled his death a homicide as a result of head trauma.

Police arrested the boy's mother, Kaycha Lynn Rivera, 22, and Rivera's boyfriend, Hector Jaimes, 23, for child neglect after the investigation showed a two-year-old who also lived in the home showed similar signs of abuse.

Police said Rivera is in the Hardee County Jail on $50,000 bond and Jaimes is in jail on a $200,000 bond. Jaimes also has a warrant for his arrest for felony Violation of Probation in Texas.

Charges related to the baby's death are pending.
