U.S. Government shutdown: What's open, closed?

WASHINGTON, D.C. - A number of government agencies and services have come to a halt.

The number of affected federal employees is fairly substantial and the list of agencies is expansive.

For example, the Department of Human Health and Services has 78,198 employees. 37,686 would be furloughed. The agency would remain open.

The Federal Trade Commission has 1,178 employees. 893 would be furloughed.  The agency would be closed or not able to function.

The same holds true for the National Science Foundation which would be reduced to 300 employees from a staff of 2,000.
