Timeline: Super Bowl history through the years

Super Bowl XLVIII will be a new milestone in the history of the big game. This is the first time the Super Bowl will be played outdoors in the northern U.S.

In the history of Super Bowls, 21 out of 47 games were won by the team whose city had the smaller population, according to the National Football League. The estimated population of Denver on July 1, 2012, was 634,265, according to the Census Bureau.  The estimated population of Seattle on July 1, 2012, was 634,535, according to the Census Bureau.

Super Bowl XLVIII will be played on Feb. 2 at MetLife Stadium, the home of the New York Jets and New York Giants. The Denver Broncos will play the Seattle Seahawks.

Here's a breakdown of the past games:

  • During the 1970 Super Bowl, more than 80,000 people attended, setting a new record.
  • The Super Bowl has been played six times in the Louisiana Superdome.
  • In 1979, the Steelers became the first team to win three Super Bowls.
  • In 1992,the Redskins coach, Joe Gibbs became the third head coach to win three Super  Bowls.
  • In 2007, Tony Dungy became the first black coach to win a Super Bowl.
