Tampa General Hospital welcomes first birth of the new year

Child's mother had hoped to give birth earlier

TAMPA - A Ruskin family's newest arrival also happened to be Tampa General Hospital's first birth of 2014.

Lucero Martinez gave birth to Aileen Capula Martinez at 12:33 a.m. Wednesday morning. Lucero opted out of an epidural. Due to intense labor pains, she had hoped her daughter would be born around 11 p.m. Tuesday.

"I just wanted to have her already. I didn't think about waiting for her to come into the new year," Lucero said.

Lucero said Aileen's father, however, wanted a New Year's baby.

Aileen was born on her due date. Both mother and baby appeared to be doing well.

Lucero said she plans to tell Aileen all about her special birthday when she is older, adding an extra reason to celebrate around New Year's.
