BRANDON, Fla. - A Riverview man is in custody after allegedly opening fire more than a dozen times on a woman and a girl sitting in their vehicle in a Waffle House parking lot early Saturday morning.
Hillsborough County Sheriff's spokesperson Cristal Bermudez Nunez said that just before 1 a.m., Briana Reddick, 20, and Princess Benoit, 16, stopped at the Waffle House restaurant at Lumsden Road in Brandon with two other friends.
The two women waited in the car in the parking lot while their friends ran inside to get food.
While they waited, deputies say Matthew Laine, 22, exited the restaurant and fired 15 rounds at the victims at point-blank range.
Reddick was hit in the right leg and arm. Benoit suffered cuts from broken glass that fell when the windows were shot out.
Reddick was taken to Tampa General Hospital in stable condition and remains hospitalized Saturday afternoon.
After the shooting, Laine fled from the scene in a silver sedan, but was later located and arrested at his home.
In their preliminary investigation, deputies said they have found no reason to believe that there was a connection between Laine, Reddick and Benoit, with no altercation taking place before the shooting that would have instigated violence.
Nunez said Saturday afternoon that Reddick was still undergoing surgery and detectives were waiting to question her further.
Detectives believe the gun used was Laine's personal weapon.
A relative who answered when
ABC Action News contacted the family by phone for comment on Laine's arrest said she had not been made aware of the charges against her cousin and would have to contact his father.
She added that she had "no comment."
Laine was also arrested in 2010 for battery on a firefighter. According to Hillsborough County Jail records, Laine is listed as a Security Guard for CSCP, but the cousin said he was not a security guard.
