After getting her iron levels checked by her doctor, Carrie Ann Inaba was diagnosed with a common condition that she’d never even heard of. It was causing her to feel intense fatigue, pain and brain fog, and she knew something was making her feel different.

It’s called Iron Deficiency Anemia (IDA), a condition estimated to affect up to five million adults in the United States. Several pre-existing medical conditions can put both men and women at risk for IDA, including women’s health conditions, gastrointestinal conditions like inflammatory bowel diseases, cancer, chronic kidney disease, and heart failure. Mild to moderate IDA may have no signs or symptoms, but as it progresses, patients may show signs of fatigue, shortness of breath, chest pain, headaches, dizziness or brittle nails. People living with IDA may also experience symptoms like cravings for ice, fast heartbeat, yellow or pale skin, and cold hands or feet. However, it’s also possible not to experience any symptoms at all.

That’s why Carrie Ann has teamed up with Get Iron Informed, a campaign developed to raise awareness of IDA and encourage people to talk to their doctors about checking their iron levels.
