Apple iPhone tops Samsung Galaxy S4 in durability test from SquareTrade

Don't Waste Your Money

When you're deciding what smartphone to buy, you usually consider size, cost, and features.

You don't think much about durability. But a new report says maybe you should.

Glass Breaks Easily

No one wants a smartphone with a shattered screen.

But it happens all too frequently, when we drop them, sit on them, or crush them in a purse.

Now, SquareTrade, the extended warranty company, has dropped, slid, and even submerged in water some popular phones.

The Results....

SquareTrade gives the new Samsung Galaxy S4 a 7 out of 10 when it comes to breakability, saying it is more prone to shattering than many other phones.

The older Galaxy S3 gets a 6.5, a little better, which mean it is less susceptible to breaking.

Apples iPhone received a much better 5, with SquareTrade calling it "far more durable overall." Mac blogs credit the iPhones thicker metal casing and smaller glass screen.

Doesn't That Stink?

And from the doesn't that stink file, why you shouldn't carry a smartphone without a case. It's amazing how many people avoid cases because they like the sleek look of glass and aluminum.

But a drop on a sidewalk is almost guaranteed to result in a shattered screen, and a replacement cost of at least $100.

Doesn't that stink? Buy a case....the thicker the better.

My advice: If you are buying a phone for a child or teen, durability should be something you consider.

And if you a bit clumsy like me, you may want to keep it in mind too so you don't waste your money.
