Tropical Storm Tropical Storm Patty is weakening in Atlantic

MIAMI - Tropical Storm Patty is weakening as it drifts in the Atlantic.

The storm's maximum sustained winds decreased early Friday to near 40 mph. Additional weakening is forecast and the U.S. National Hurricane Center says Patty could become a remnant low by Saturday.

The storm is centered about 230 miles east-northeast of the central Bahamas and is moving south-southwest near 3 mph.

Meanwhile, a broad area of low pressure over the Eastern Bahamas is gaining steam and is expected to become a depression or tropical storm within the next 48 hours.   If it does become a storm, it would be named Rafael.

Current computer models have the system eventually heading north into the Atlantic, posing no threat to Florida.
