The six most important road-trip tips to read before you hit the road

Phone numbers to load into your cell now

TAMPA BAY - As a traffic reporter, I share a lot of information about services available in Tampa Bay, and throughout Florida, to help commuters. Here are what I consider the six most important road-trip tips you should read before you head out on your holiday travels. Stay safe!

1. In the event of a minor traffic accident on a Florida interstate or Turnpike, call *347, or *FHP. That number will connect you to the Florida Highway Patrol dispatcher closest to your location. In the event of a crash with injuries, call 911.

2. If you have minor car trouble on a Florida interstate or Turnpike, such as a flat tire or overheated vehicle, you can also call *347. A dispatcher will notify a Road Ranger, who will respond to help you. The Road Rangers are a free service.

3. Florida driver's license holders can add emergency contact information that can be accessed digitally by law enforcement in the event of an emergency. This information may save crucial time if ever it becomes necessary to contact family members, or other loved ones. This service is only available to individuals holding a current Florida Driver License or Florida Identification Card. Click here to do that now.

4. The website FL511.com includes updated information on interstate accidents and driving conditions. The site also includes thumbnail images of live traffic cameras. FL511 is available as a free app as well.

5. The National Traffic and Road Closure Information website is a collection of links from public agencies and other entities that offer information about current traffic conditions across the nation. The links are organized by State and include information on road closures due to weather or road construction, and traffic conditions.

6. For questions about traffic conditions in the Tampa Bay area, follow @TampaBayTraffic on Twitter. You can also tweet me a specific question about your drive.
