TAMPA BAY - David Prince has faced adversity of his own before. But he doesn't know how he can use that to help his friend, Oscar Pistorius. Pistorius is charged with premeditated murder in the shooting death of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, in South Africa.
He became an international star as the first bilateral amputee to compete in the Olympic Games, which he did last summer in London. But he's been in Paralympic competitions for years, and that's where Prince has competed against him dozens of times--David thinks it's more than anyone else in the world.
David stood on the podium with Oscar at the Paralympic Games in London, after Pistorius won gold in the 400m and Prince won bronze.
Prince, like fans around the world, was floored by the news of Steenkamp's death and Pistorius' subsequent arrest. He considers Oscar a close friend, but did not want to defend him when we talked. He didn't want to convict Pistorius either. Not knowing all the facts, David can only speak to who he knows Oscar to be. And none of what he says about Pistorius would indicate that he thought his friend was capable of what he's charged with doing.
