Viking Classic start pushed to Sunday

Last Update: 10/30 8:03 pm

The first round of the weather-delayed Viking Classic has been postponed until at least Sunday.

PGA Tour rules officials said they would meet Saturday morning at Annandale Golf Club to evaluate the condition of the course, which has been soaked by heavy rains.

A decision will then be made on what to do going forward.

"We should be out here tomorrow morning looking around by 9:00 or so just to see exactly where we are going from here and just see if we can find some golf to play here in the next few days," said tour official Slugger White.

The first two days -- and now Saturday as well -- have been washed out without a shot being struck. It marked the first time consecutive rounds were postponed on the PGA Tour since the 2005 BellSouth Classic. That tournament was cut to 54 holes and won by Phil Mickelson on Monday.

Officials could decide to shorten the Viking Classic to 54 or 36 holes and try to finish it sometime next week. There also remains the possibility of cancellation, which hasn't happened on the PGA Tour since 1991.

There is no event scheduled for the U.S. next weekend.

"It's rather dismal. There is no fooling anybody with that," White said of the course, which was underwater. "So it's something we have to look at and I just don't want to speculate on anything until tomorrow (when) we look at it again."

Will MacKenzie is the defending champion.
