Rays Manager and players will shave their heads to pay tribute to children battling cancer

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - Rays Manager Joe Maddon and Rays players will shave their heads to pay tribute to children battling cancer. All proceeds benefit the Pediatric Cancer Foundation (PCF) and the Vincent Lecavalier Pediatric Cancer and Blood Disorders Center at All Children's Hospital.

The event is Thursday, March 15, at 11:30 a.m. at Charlotte Sports Park located at 2300 El Jobean Road in Port Charlotte.

These haircuts will take place just prior to the Rays-Phillies game at 1:05 p.m.  So to show support for a player, the public is encouraged to text "Cut" to 50555 to make a $10 donation or visit http://www.pcfcutforacure.org. The event runs through May 4.

Rays Manager Joe Maddon says: "This is about being there for the kids and their families. We want them to know they are not alone. It's a small gesture, but it is our way of showing support for them while gaining empathy for what they are going through. We have a saying posted in our locker room that says 'Fortune favors the bold.' As we go forward with this campaign, we are doing so under the flag 'Fortune favors the bald.' As an organization, we are proud to support organizations and institutions like the Pediatric Cancer Foundation (PCF) and the Moffitt Cancer Center."
