KABUL (AP) — Afghan President Hamid Karzai's challenger in the recent presidential election accuses the current government of wasting the lives and the resources of its Western allies.
Former Foreign Minister Abdullah Abdullah's comments come a day after five British soldiers were gunned down in southern Helmand province.
Karzai's former challenger also says the Afghan government can't rein in rampant corruption. He adds that the Afghan election commission's decision not to have a runoff election after a fraud-marred first round was not legal. He says the move creates a government that cannot be trusted to follow the rule of law.
Meanwhile, there are reports that Abdullah and Karzai have been in talks over the last few weeks to negotiate a power-sharing agreement, but no deal has emerged.
