Heartbreak in Riverview: Deputies say two pit bulls mauled and killed a four-year-old boy

The boy and his mom were visiting his uncle

RIVERVIEW, Fla. - As a mother of two, the news of a four-year-old boy in her neighborhood being killed hits Crystal Huntley right in the heart.

"I feel sorry for the family," she said.  "I've got two kids of my own and I know I wouldn't be able to stand right now if that happened to mine."

Hillsborough deputies say young Logan Shepard was with his mom Stephanie Groulx. They walked from their house to his uncle's house a few blocks away on Rhodine Road in Riverview. Before Logan and his mother arrived deputies say his uncle crated his two pit bulls.

"They probably keep them inside because I've never seen any dogs outside over there," Huntley said.

Deputies say while Logan was in the house eating ice cream, his mother and the others went into another room to talk. A few moments later they heard screaming. When they ran out Logan was gone.

"I'm saddened. Anytime a kid is taken needlessly by an animal,' Dennis Almeda, a nearby neighbor said.

At the time of the attack two deputies were doing a traffic stop just a hundred yards up the road when they heard the screams. As they ran to the house that's when they found little Logan laying in the front yard with the two pit  bulls standing over him.

"I wouldn't leave my kid alone with caged animals because the kids automatically go to play with the animals," Huntley said.

Logan never even made it to the hospital. "I don't want to see any kid have to go like that," Almeda said.

Animal Services say they have never been called to the home before. They did take the two dogs and euthanized them. The investigation into what happened to little Logan continues.

RIVERVIEW - Deputies found four-year-old Logan Shepard Saturday night in a relative's front yard with two pit bulls standing over him, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.

Logan and his mother arrived at his aunt and uncles' home yesterday. His uncle crated the two pit bulls before they arrived. He was left in the living room while the rest of the family went into the master bedroom to talk. While in the room, they heard him screaming.

Two HCSO deputies happened to be 100 yards away and heard his screams too. That's when they found his body in the front yard.

According to the Sheriff's Office, there has been no prior animal calls to the home. Hillsborough County Animal Services took possession of the dogs.

This afternoon the two dogs had been euthanized according to Hillsborough County Animal Services.
