Trip to Hollywood up for grabs for Oscars viewers who use ConnecTV app

Academy Awards celebrated via live online party

Viewers of the upcoming Oscars could win prizes simply by using a mobile app while watching the show.

America’s Big Hollywood Party is being thrown by evite and ConnecTV. The live virtual party is a social challenge of sorts and takes place during the 86th Academy Awards, which are slated for March 2.

Viewers are asked to download the ConnecTV app to their smart phones and use it to clip and share their favorite moments from the red carpet and awards show. Clips must be shared on social media using the hashtag #AwardsParty2014.

The groups that have partnered to sponsor the Big Hollywood Party will judge the best combination of pictures, videos and clips and will award prizes, including a grand prize trip to Hollywood.

Sponsoring the party are FilmBreak, Ignited Spaces, General Assembly and ConnecTV.

The evite site encourages viewers to create their own party and to create an invitation to send to others.

ConnecTV launched in 2012 and is free to download from iTunes.

Up for best picture this year are the films “American Hustle,” “Captain Phillips,” “Dallas Buyers Club,” “Gravity,” “Her,” “Nebraska,” “Philomena,” “12 Years A Slave” and “The Wolf of Wall Street.” The list of best actor nominees includes Christian Bale, Bruce Dern, Leonardo DiCaprio, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Matthew McConaughey.

Best actress nominees are Amy Adams, Cate Blanchett, Sandra Bullock, Judi Dench and Meryl Streep.
Hosting this year’s Oscars is Ellen DeGeneres, host of “The Ellen DeGeneres Show.” This will be her second time hosting, having first done it in 2007.

The ratings for the Oscars increased last year, up 19 percent over 2012. The host in 2013 was Seth MacFarlane.
Also during this year’s show, singer Bette Midler is expected to perform. It will be her first time.

Here are some samples of videos clipped through ConnecTV during the recent Grammys.
