MIAMI - The first named storm of the 2014 Atlantic hurricane season grew stronger Tuesday afternoon, according to reports from an Air Force reconnaissance plane.
At 5 p.m., Tropical Storm Arthur was about 135 miles east-southeast of Cape Canaveral.
A tropical storm watch is in effect for Florida's east coast from Fort Pierce to Flagler Beach. Arthur was meandering to the northwest at 2 mph with maximum sustained winds of 50 mph.
Areas north of the watch area to Virginia Beach were advised to closely monitor the storm's progress.
A gradual turn to the north is expected on Wednesday.
The system is expected to remain just offshore and pass east of northeast Florida on Wednesday and Wednesday night.
