Students hold rallies demanding arrest of George Zimmerman in shooting death of Trayvon Martin

ORLANDO - College students around Florida rallied Monday to demand the arrest of a white neighborhood watch captain who shot an unarmed black teen last month.

Students gathered in front of the Seminole County criminal courts building in Sanford and on the campus of Florida A&M University in Tallahassee.

They are demanding the arrest of 28-year-old George Zimmerman, who authorities say shot 17-year-old Trayvon Martin last month during a confrontation in a gated central Florida community.

Zimmerman has claimed self-defense.  Florida law allows a person to use deadly force if the person believes he or she is facing a deadly threat.

Zimmerman was on patrol when he came across Martin, who was carrying an iced tea and a bag of Skittles.

Seven calls were made to 911 during the confrontation, one placed by Zimmerman to report a suspicious person.  In another call placed by a resident, a man calling for help could be heard in the background, followed by a gunshot.

The case has been turned over to the State Attorney's Office which can decide to file charges or present the case to a grand jury.
