Florida biotech report urges funding, law changes

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- A state panel is urging more government spending on biotechnology and changes in tax and environmental laws to make Florida more competitive in that industry.

The Task Force on the Study of Biotech Competitiveness presented its report Monday to Gov. Charlie Crist.

The governor expressed support for expanding Florida's biotech industry but took no immediate position on the recommendations.

They include more state support for research in Florida's universities and colleges, tax incentives for biotech companies and relaxed environmental requirements for manufacturing facilities.

The task force also opposes a 2010 ballot proposal that would let voters veto local planning changes.
