Driver, livestock killed in U.S. 27 crash

NORTHERN BROWARD COUNTY, FL -- Southbound lanes of U.S. 27 were blocked just south of the Palm Beach County border with Broward County at Mile Marker 47, following an overnight accident involving two semi-trucks.

One of the trucks was hauling livestock. The collision sent several animals onto the road. Some of them died during the crash, while others were injured and had to be euthanized at the scene.

Early indications suggest the truck carrying the animals jack-knifed in the lanes just before 10:30 P.M., and was then struck by the second large truck.

The driver of that second truck was killed in the impact.

Chopper 5 saw people trying to rescue some of the surviving animals seen running away, and heading to areas inside the Everglades.

Sheep, goats, cows, pigs and rabbits were among the animals that Chopper 5 could see at the scene.

The Florida Highway Patrol is in charge of the investigation. Troopers are worried that the animals that escaped into the Everglades will come out and later become road hazards for motorists.
