A South Florida deputy is facing charges after authorities say he took drugs from the scene of a fatal crash.
The Broward Sheriff's Office reports that 40-year-old Eduardo Mesa turned himself in Tuesday. He was charged with armed trafficking in hydrocodone, possession of Alprazolam, grand theft of a controlled substance, tampering with evidence and official misconduct.
Officials say Mesa responded in January to a pedestrian being killed by a train in Pompano Beach. Mesa collected the victim's belongings, but a homicide detective later noticed that prescription drugs were missing.
BSO public corruption detectives searched Mesa's vehicle and reported finding the victim's pills, along with other drugs.
Mesa has been suspended without pay. He has worked for the sheriff's office since 1998.
Jail records didn't list an attorney.
