Police: South Florida couple left two boys in car to go gambling at the Hialeah Park Racing & Casino

HIALEAH, Fla. - Hialeah Police say a couple left their two young children in their car Thursday so they could go gambling in a casino.

Officers charged Tyrell Johnson and his girlfriend, Josephine Laider, with Child Neglect.

Police say the Johnson and Laider left their sleeping sons, ages 1 and 4, inside their car for more than an hour so they could go gambling at the Hialeah Park Racing & Casino. The car's engine and air conditioner were running, but the doors of the 2008 Pontiac car were left unlocked.

Officials say the kids were needlessly put in danger. The boys could have opened the door and walked away or someone could have come along and taken them.

Authorities say an hour later a security guard found the children and called police.

The children were not injured and were turned over to Florida Department of Children & Families. A judge awarded the temporary custody of the boys to their maternal grandparents and ordered Johnson and Laider to stay away from their sons.

Thursday’s arrest at Hialeah Park is similar to one that occurred in January at the Seminole Hard Rock Casino in Hollywood in January. During that incident, officers arrested Anthony Wells for leaving his 3-month-old and 18-month-old children in his truck while he gambled.
