WINDERMERE, Fla. - A Windermere police officer who was shot overnight has died, according to reports from our Orlando ABC affiliate WFTV .
The police officer, identified as Robert German, was rushed to Orlando Regional Medical Center early Saturday morning after being shot, but was pronounced dead a short time later.
Authorities said German was checking on two suspicious individuals on the street at Conroy Windermere Road and Horizon Circle when he called for back up and was then shot.
When Orlando police and an Orange County Sheriff's deputy responded to the call, they found German injured and heard more shots, authorities said. They shielded themselves with their vehicles, moved German to safety and got him help.
The two suspects, described to be in either their late teens or early 20s, were found dead nearby shortly after in what was likely suicide, said Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings. They have not yet been identified and their cause of death has not been released.
German, 31, had been with the Windermere Police Department for five years and had just returned to work from four months of light duty because of an injury.
German was one of the best officers on the force and loved what he did, said Windermere Police Chief Dave Ogden at Saturday morning's press conference.
