Florida Lottery reaches record sales

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Florida Lottery has posted its best year ever in sales.

The Lottery generated nearly $4.5 billion in sales during the fiscal year that just ended June 30. That eclipsed last year's sales figures by more than $400 million.

Lottery Secretary Cindy O'Connell says one of her main goals has been to keep the games fresh as the Lottery approaches its 25th anniversary.

The Lottery launched nearly 50 new Scratch-Off games over the past year and offered players non-cash prizes, as well as second-chance drawings, to keep things fresh.

O'Connell said, "Having new, exciting games that players want to play and we've created these games because we're listening to our players, we're listening to our retailers and we're operating on all cylinders."

The record sales generated a record $1.3 billion for education in Florida.

"That's big news," said O'Connell.  "We're only here for one reason and that's to help fund education.  I couldn't be more excited about $1.3 billion in transfers."

O'Connell also credits retailers for doing a good job of promoting and selling tickets.
