Russell Johnson, best known for his role on the show "Gilligan's Island" as The Professor, has died. He was 89.
ABC News confirmed through the actor's wife that the TV star died of kidney failure peacefully in his sleep early Thursday morning.
Johnson served in World War II before becoming an actor, a career which included roles in "The Adventures of Superman," "Alfred Hitchcock Presents," and "The Twilight Zone."
He was best known, however, for his role in the 60s as The Professor, stranded on an island with several other castaways including "Gilligan" and "The Skipper" on the show "Gilligan's Island."
Johnson leaves behind his wife, Constance, and a daughter, Kim.
