TAMPA - A Tampa woman was badly injured after she was hit by a vehicle on the Courtney Campbell Causeway Monday morning. The driver did not stop, Tampa police say.
The woman, 41-year-old Chantelle Barbose, was traveling westbound on the causeway shortly after 4:30 a.m. when she crashed into the barrier wall.
"The driver somehow lost control for whatever reason," says Andrea Davis with Tampa Police. "And crashed into the barrier. The driver's side door got pinned up against the barrier "
Barbose then tried to crawl out of the passenger side window according to Police and at some point fell into the road. That's when witnesses told police her leg was run over by a black SUV.
The driver did not stop.
"It is possible that the driver did not know that they hit this woman, but they did take off from the scene and we are looking for that vehicle," says Davis.
Barbose was taken to Tampa General Hospital where she was last listed in critical condition. Police say she has severe burns as well as a broken leg.
Anyone who may have seen the accident or has information is asked to contact Tampa Police as the investigation continues.
The crash shut down the causeway's westbound lanes until around 9:30 a.m. The service road on the north side of the causeway was used to keep traffic moving.
Eastbound traffic was restricted to one lane.
All lanes were reopened around 9:30 a.m.
