Metropolitan Ministries opens Inside the Box Café in Westshore

Business pays employees, helps feed the homeless

TAMPA - The Westshore lunch crowd has a new option: Inside the Box Cafe.

The restaurant and catering business run by Metropolitan Ministries is the second of its kind to open in Tampa in three years.

Tim Marks, the president of Metropolitan Ministries, said the cafe in downtown Tampa has been been a success. The money made at the eatery offers a two-fold benefit: Employee pay for graduates of the charity's culinary training program, and donations that help feed the homeless.

"We're all about employment and self-sufficiency," Marks said.

Andy DeHerrera, a preparatory cook at the new cafe, said Metropolitan Ministries has helped turn his life around after a troubled past dealing with alcohol and drug abuse, anxiety and depression.

"I feel very blessed," DeHerrera told ABC Action News.

The cafe is located on the first floor of the office building at 1715 N. Westshore Blvd.
