Unresponsive diver rescued by Coast Guard helicoper in Gulf of Mexico

TAMPA - A Coast Guard helicopter on a training mission Wednesday rescued a 54-year-old man injured while diving near Tarpon Springs.

The Coast Guard command center in St. Petersburg received a message just before 10:30 a.m. from a charter dive vessel reporting that a man had been injured while diving and was unresponsive.

The command center diverted an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from the Coast Guard Air Station in Clearwater to the area of the vessel about 15 miles northwest of Tarpon Springs. The diver was initially unresponsive to CPR but was later revived, according to the Coast Guard.

The diver was taken to Tampa General Hospital.
