Transformer fire knocks out power to over 2,000 in Brandon

TAMPA - Hillsborough County Fire Rescue responded to a transformer fire at a substation in Brandon Thursday night.

Tampa Electric told ABC Action News the fire knocked out power to over 2,000 customers for a couple hours.

The transformer ignited at 9920 E. Adamo Drive.

TECO shut down the substation to help de-energize the fire.

According to TECO, the substation is used to decrease voltage through the transformers, which are cooled using mineral oil.  But the mineral oil is fueling the fire.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
