TAMPA - It may be unseasonably warm right now in the bay area, but that doesn't mean you can't get into the holiday spirit by lacing up a pair of skates and go ice skating!
Tampa's Downtown Ice is now open at Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park. It's Tampa's only outdoor ice rink.
So how do they keep an outdoor ice rink from melting in sunny Florida? The rink is made of sand which is covered in white plastic. Under the plastic is a maze of tubes containing propylene glycol. A chiller keeps the glycol at 0 degrees no matter how hot it is outside.
The rink will be open everyday until January 5, 2014 with the exception of Thanksgiving. Skating is $10 for 90 minutes and includes skate rental.
Curtis Hixon Waterfront park is located at 600 N Ashley Drive.
Rink hours of operations:
Monday -Thursday: 4 p.m. - 9 p.m.
Friday: 4 p.m. - 10 p.m.
Saturday: 10 a.m. - 10 p.m.
Sunday: Noon - 9 p.m.
