Hundreds attend Tampa rally to support Trayvon Martin family

TAMPA - It is important for Tampa to show its support for Trayvon Martin's family, a Tampa minister who hosted a rally said Tuesday.

Reverend Dr. Tom Scott opened the doors of the 34th Street Church of God for Tuesday night's rally. "It is important to show that the community stands behind the family of Trayvon Martin and will not stand for injustice," said Scott.

Tampa City Councilman Frank Reddick called for the rally, saying in a prepared statement he, "has invited local leaders and the community to join him in requesting the Florida Attorney General and Department of Justice to take action in this case." Both agencies have already launched investigations.

Trayvon Martin, an unarmed black teen, was shot dead by a crime watch volunteer in Sanford, Fla., one month ago.

The gunman, George Zimmerman, told police he fired in self defense.
