Tampa police: Man arrested after firing shots at police helicopter

TAMPA - A Tampa police pilot was luckily uninjured when a man fired shots at his helicopter early Saturday morning.

The pilots had been patrolling the area when they heard gun fire. They soon realized that they were the target.

According to police, Thomas Hearld, 56, fired three shots at the police helicopter around 3: 15 a.m. The aircraft was not hit by any of the shots.

Police say he was intoxicated when they took him into custody.

Hearld was taken to Hillsborough County Jail facing charges of aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer and shooting at an aircraft.
