Search on for men who dressed as officers and tried to rob a jewelry store, say police

TAMPA - Tampa Police are on the hunt for a group of men who they say pretended to be officers and opened fire on a jewelry store owner. It is a crime that unfolded within seconds and was all captured on surveillance camera.

Police say they tried to Rob Marcelo's Jewelry Store, on Columbus Drive, in Tampa, around 8:00 this morning.

Store Owner Marcelo Suarez says the trouble started when four men pulled up in a car with light bars on the dashboard, similar to a police cruiser.

Suarez said, "Two uniformed officers got out of the car -- long sleeves, long shirt, police hat, police badge, had police gun on the side."

Assuming they were legit, Suarez let them inside.   Within seconds, he says he knew they weren't real police.

Suarez said they told him, "'Put your hands up.'  The manner, the way they were speaking wasn't correct for an officer."

That's when Suarez made a run for it, and bullets start flying.

Suarez said, "He starts shooting one time right here, when I'm running to the back then he shoots and other time when I'm running in the back.  I proceed to go in the back and I shot him one time, two times then I took a knee here and shot at him a couple more times."

We're told the guys got away with nothing.

Suarez, who did not recognize the men, thinks he may have shot one of them. He plans on opening up tomorrow, but not before making some changes, like asking for ID at the door.

Suarez said, "You need to identify yourself much better. Just don't believe anybody with a blue and red light and a cop car outside."

Damage done to Suarez's store includes bullet holes in walls and equipment getting hit.  Suarez was not hurt.

"I have insurance for jewelry.  You can't have insurance on life. Once you are dead that is it," he said.
