A wanted man crashed into MacDill Air Force Base's gate Friday night, leading to a search that temporarily put the base on lock down, authorities said.
The crash occurred about 9:30 p.m., police said.
Steven Coggins II was wanted for failure to register as a sex offender.
He rammed into the Dale Mabry Highway gate in his vehicle, gaining entry to the base, MacDill public affairs official Terry Montrose said. The Air Force shut down every gate on the base for about 45 minutes as they searched for him inside.
Tampa Police Department was called to assist and used a helicopter and dogs to search. Coggins' car was eventually found on the northwest side of the flight line where TPD K-9's caught him.
Police say Coggins is currently at Tampa General Hospital to get treatment for some medical issues he was experiencing at the scene.
Coggins had spent time in jail from 2009 to 2012 for sexual battery charges on a minor.
The incident did not effect Airfest, which began 8 a.m Saturday.
