TAMPA - A grandmother was arrested Friday after allegedly killing her granddaughter seven days earlier.
Tampa police say Carida Cobb, 41, was watching her three and a half year old granddaughter on December 13th. Tampa Fire Rescue and police later responded for a medical call to Cobb's residence on Juanita Street.
Responders found the child in the bath tub in cardiac arrest. She had visible injuries to her body, head, legs and arms. The child later died from her injuries.
When Cobb was interviewed by police she claimed the child was attempting to take a bath, but was not cooperating because she didn't want to get her hair washed. She claimed the girl jumped up and down in the tub and may have hurt herself on a soap dish.
As police continued to interview Cobb she changed her story several times about how the child received her injuries.
The Medical Examiner later determined the child had severe internal injuries and lacerations to her liver that were caused by blunt force trauma, ruling her death a homicide.
Once the autopsy disproved Cobb's story, police say Cobb attempted to take her life by swallowing several pills. She was taken to the hospital and arrested after she was released.
Cobb was arrested on charges of first degree murder and child abuse charges. She remains at Hillsborough County Jail on no bond.
