A 24-hour grassroots effort to raise $1 million is underway in Tampa.
It's called Give Day Tampa Bay and it will benefit more than 380 charities.
Organizers hope to inspire a new generation of philanthropist, but doing so means doing away with the traditional fundraising methods.

Instead of telethons or mailers, Give Day Tampa Bay is banking on technology to inspire generosity, something organizers say is lacking in the bay area.
"Tampa Bay as a region is 260th in the nation in per capita philanthropic giving, and that's just unacceptable for our community," organizer Ned Pope said.
Give Day Tampa Bay is taking the social media savvy of young professionals and spreading the word on sites like Facebook and Twitter.
Potential supporters can visit givedaytampabay.org and shop for a charity they want to support.
The minimum donation is $25.
They hope that figure will show even cash-strapped young professional they can be a philanthropist.
