Early morning delays at Port of Tampa stalled Ohio State chartered cruise fundraising for cancer

Foggy conditions once again stalled cruise travel

TAMPA - Delays continued Monday as dense fog slowed cruise ship travel yet again.

According to the Port of Tampa, Royal Caribbean's Jewel of the Sea was stalled about four hours away from the port early Monday morning due to foggy conditions.

The ship arrived about an hour and a half behind schedule to the port at 8:45 a.m.

Many passengers disembarking the ship were in a hurry to get to ground transportation as their tardy arrival left them in danger of missing flights to get back home.  Many of those passengers were from Columbus, Ohio.

The cruise was chartered by The Ohio State University to raise money for cancer research.

An annual trip that turned into a bit of a stressful one as cruise passengers moved quickly to find cabs close to the port.

Ohio State head football coach Urban Meyer was aboard the ship, as well as former Ohio State football standouts and Heisman Trophy winners Archie Griffin and Eddie George.

The star studded cast making the stalled trip worth it according to Bob Appleton, passenger aboard the ship.

"It was ok," Appleton said.  "We had dinner with Coach Meyer and his wife last night."

Morissa Jenkins, another passenger, said the wait at sea wasn't too bad, but it was a bit unnerving.

"It was kind of like pitch dark, compared to the nights before.  You could see the moon and the stars.  But last night you couldn't even see your hand in front of your face."

The Port of Tampa says the Jewel of the Seas is the only cruise ship scheduled to dock at the Port Monday and should be leaving on time at 4:30 p.m. Monday evening.
