Door-to-door security salesman arrested in Hillsborough rape

TAMPA - Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office deputies have arrested a door-to-door security system salesman suspected in a woman's rape.

According to Det. Larry McKinnon, 19-year-old Rashad Hales of Tampa, knocked on the front door of the victim's home to solicit business for ADT security.

The victim reportedly opened the door and told Hale her fiance was at a friend's house, and that he usually handles that type of business.

Hales allegedly left, then returned a few minutes later and knocked on the door again.

This time, detectives say Hale told the victim he had talked to her fiance about signing up for the security service.

When the victim attempted to close the door, Hales reportedly grabbed her wrist to prevent her from doing so.

Authorities say Hales pushed his way inside the home, locked the door, and beat and strangled the victim with his hands and an electrical cord, all while telling her that he should kill her.

According to McKinnon, Hales raped the woman in a back bedroom, then threatened her with a kitchen knife, telling her that he would kill her if she told anyone what happened.

After taking the victim's cell phone, Hales fled on foot.

The victim's fiance arrived home shortly after the attack and called 911.

Patrol deputies, K9 units, and Air Service quickly responded and set up a perimeter. A short time passed and deputies spotted the suspect running.

Deputies with K9 units tracked Hales. After a brief foot chase, he was captured Friday evening in the parking lot of a Shell Gas Station located at 11203 Sheldon Road in Tampa.

Later during an interview with detectives, Hales admitted to the offense and regretted only that he did not kill the victim.

Detectives learned that Hales was legitimately working for Secure Watch (an authorized dealer for ADT) in the neighborhood going door-to-door.

The victim's was medically treated and released.

Rashad Hales was taken to the Hillsborough County Jail where he's currently being held without bond.

Detectives will continue with this investigation and request that anyone who recognizes Rashad Hales, may have additional information, or who may be a victim themselves, please contact HCSO at 813-247-8200.
