SOUTH TAMPA - Datz Deli and Verizon Wireless have teamed up against domestic violence in honor of Melissa Morrison, a former Datz employee who died in a domestic violence incident earlier this year.
Customers and employees of Datz Deli in South Tampa came together to support the HopeLine cell phone drive, a program that collects no-longer-used cell phones to benefit local domestic violence victims and shelters. Verizon Wireless donated the money to match each phone donation and presented The Spring of Tampa Bay with a check in Melissa's name.
The month-long cell phone drive concluded today with a ceremony to thank Datz and Verizon for their help -- and to raise awareness for domestic violence victims like Melissa.
Melissa's stepmother, Luanne Morisson, attended the event and said she believed Melissa would have wanted to encourage others to speak up if they were in a dangerous situation.
"I know she would want other people -- because of what happened to her -- to continue making it known, get the awareness out and don't be quiet about this anymore," said Morrison.
