YBOR CITY, Fla. - His last big movie, Argo, won the Academy Award for best picture. Now Ben Affleck is scouting Tampa Bay for his next project.
The actor and director was spotted in Ybor City Tuesday scouting possible locations.
Lonnie Herman leads walking tours through Ybor City, passing on his knowledge of the area's history. And that history could soon include another major Hollywood movie..
Affleck's visit included stops in the Don Vicente Inn and the Cuban Club.
"He wasn't in any of those places very long, but we know he's scouting locations," said Herman.
The locations are for a film Affleck will direct and star in, based on the novel Live By Night. It's A gangster story that follows rum bootleggers from Boston to Tampa to Cuba during prohibition.
A manager of the one of the places Affleck scouted, confirmed he stopped by briefly, but didn't want say too much until it's official.
And the Tampa Film Commission also doesn't want to jump the gun either.
There is the fear Affleck could take the production to Canada because of more financial incentives to film there.
But the president for Ybor's Civic Association says this is the place to make the movie.
"It's a great neighborhood and there are a lot of great historic architecture, great buildings and restaurants and things he could use in his film productions. We were happy to see that he actually came to Ybor City," said Tony Lacolla.
The Punisher and Magic Mike shot scenes on these old streets. But Ybor City has a lot to offer Hollywood is ready for the bright lights again.
