Police comb beaches for underage drinking

Portable ID card readers catch fakes

TREASURE ISLAND, Fla. - Treasure Island beach attracts between 2,000 and 2,500 people a day on the weekends during Spring Break season.

Amid the crowds, Treasure Island Police Officer David Albonetti is mainly keeping his eye out for one kind of person.

"We're looking for underage possession of alcohol," Officer Albonetti said.

Officer Albonetti combs the beach for several hours a day, asking people for IDs.

Within just an hour on Saturday, two young women were arrested.

"We're just enforcing state law," Officer Albonetti said. "The only way they're going to learn not to do it is to witness people being arrested and taken away, transported up to the jail."

Surveillance cameras nearby and hand-held ID card readers help police beef up their presence during the busy season.

On Spring Break season weekends, they average six underage drinking arrests a day.
