Distracted driver collides with pedestrian, fatally striking him

SAINT PETERSBURG - A man leaving Saint Anthony's Hospital in St. Petersburg was killed after a car hit him early Saturday morning.

St. Petersburg police say Walter Weaver Jr, 54, was starting to cross 5th Avenue in a marked crosswalk when Edward Jablon III, driving a PT Cruiser, hit him.

Police say Jablon was distracted by his phone while he was driving and didn't see the victim.

When the car hit the male victim, the impact  tossed him into the air. His body landed in a nearby curb lane.

He was taken to Bayfront Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead.

The family of the victim has not been notified as of this time. He was a transient and believed to be from the Kentucky area.

Police are still investigating the circumstances.

It is unknown if Jablon will face charges.
