Stolen St. Petersburg police cruiser found in Lake Maggiore

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - An unmarked St. Petersburg police vehicle was stolen from a detective's driveway and found in Lake Maggiore Monday morning.  Among the items missing from the car, a Glock handgun and an AR 15 rifle.

Detective Matthew Furse, 32, discovered his city-issued vehicle, a 2007 Chevrolet Impala, missing from the driveway of his south St. Petersburg home.It appeared his personal vehicle had been targeted as well.

Around 7:30 a.m., a passerby spotted the police vehicle submerged on the east side of the lake about 15 feet from shore.

Missing from the trunk was the detectives issued equipment including his Glock 45 cal. handgun, a Colt AR-15 rifle, a portable police radio and ammunition.

According to a police statement, it appeared the suspect or suspects forced their way into the detective's personal vehicle where a set of keys to the police car were kept in the center console.  It appeared an attempt was also made to steal the personal vehicle.

The keys from the console apparently were used to take the police vehicle and remove the equipment.  The car was then driven into the lake.
