ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - St. Pete Police say the State Attorney's office is looking at filing criminal charges in the case where they say a woman accidentally shot her friend at Tyrone Square Mall over the weekend.
They say 51 year-old Pam Beck did not have a conceal and carry permit and told cops she didn't realize the loaded gun was in her purse when she went shopping on Sunday with her friend.
Police say she put the purse on the floor of a Starbucks and it fired, hitting her friend in the leg.
Her friend was taken to Bayfront Medical Center where doctors decided to leave the bullet there.
Beck told police her father had given her the gun for protection.
Mike Puetz with St. Pete Police says even though it may have been an accident, felony charges could be involved because she did not have a permit.
"Because it does clearly violate the word of the law. But you also have to take into account the intent, as we do with any other crime," he said of authorities reviewing the case.
Puetz also says an officer on the scene declined to arrest her because of the circumstances.
