ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - An 18-year-old man was showing a handgun to his friends Wednesday evening when he pulled the trigger and accidentally killed himself, according to St. Petersburg police.
Alexander Xavier Shaw was sitting on a back patio at 733 71st Avenue North around 6:30 p.m. when he produced a .38 caliber revolver. He told his friends he kept one round out of the firing chamber to prevent an accidental discharge.
Witnesses told detectives that Shaw went to demonstrate the gun was safe by placing the barrel to his head and pulling the trigger.
The gun fired and he suffered a fatal wound to the head. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.
Shaw's uncle and grandparents were in the home at the time of the shooting.
The incident remains under investigation by homicide detectives and the Medical Examiner's Office.
Shaw is the son of a St. Petersburg man, Richard M. Shaw, who was murdered during a home invasion robbery on June 18, 2012. Police said Alexander Shaw was there at the time and witnessed his father's murder.
