Deputies: St. Pete man tried to kill grandmother

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - A St. Petersburg man is under arrest after he tried to murder his 70-year-old grandmother, according to Pinellas County deputies.

Investigators say Joseph Richard Levan, 23, stabbed Eula Powless multiple times and then called 911 shortly after midnight Monday.

When officers arrived at their home on 50th Avenue North, they found Powless with stab wounds to her neck and upper body.

She was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.

Levan admitted to the crime, according to a sheriff's statement, and told detectives he had been planning the attack for several days.

He was charged with attempted first-degree murder and booked into the Pinellas County Jail.

There was no immediate word from police on a motive for the stabbing.

The investigation is ongoing.
