ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Homicide detectives are currently investigating a late night shooting in St. Petersburg.
At 10:45 p.m. Wednesday, police responded to a report of a person shot inside a house on 19th Street South.
When they arrived on scene, officers located 27-year-old Ebony Stewart inside with a gunshot wound to her upper body. Medical personnel attended to Stewart, but she died at the scene.
Two other people received gunshot wounds. They were taken to local hospitals with non-life threatening injuries.
It apparently started with a simple knock at the front door. Stewart answered it, and took the first bullet as the investigators say two suspects opened fire.
A neighbor who did not want to be identified says she held Stewart while she died. "She couldn't say nothing. I asked her over and over and over again if she could hear me, squeeze my finger, let us know."
Friends say the way Stewart died, violently and senselessly, is all the more unbearable because of the way she lived. "Greeted you with a smile every time, no matter what was happening," said one friend who asked to remain anonymous.
One of the other victims was a 58-year-old woman who had been holding an 18-month-old baby.
Officers discovered the shootings occurred during a home invasion. Police say no suspects have been identified at this time.
