Man fatally stabs roommate after suspecting him of stealing food, St. Petersburg Police say

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - A St. Petersburg man living in a transitional home is accused of killing his roommate over food Tuesday morning, according to the St. Petersburg Police.

The victim, 56-year-old Anthony Smith and the suspect, 36-year-old Corey Walker, lived together at a transitional home operated by New Faith Free Methodist Church on the 2800th block of 1st Avenue S.

Witnesses told detectives that Walker complained about food items that had been stolen from his room. He began to specifically accuse Smith of being responsible.

An argument sparked between Smith and Walker, who grabbed a butcher knife from the kitchen and stabbed Smith once in the upper chest.

One of the other residents in the home ran outside and asked someone to call police.

When officers arrived about 9:45 a.m., they found the victim inside. He was taken to Bayfront Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 10:17 a.m. The knife was recovered inside the home's kitchen sink.  Walker was found inside and arrested.
